The Somerset & Dorset Railway built the line from Bath to Evercreech Junction which opened in 1874 providing an north-south link (to last almost a century) cutting across the territory of the GWR. The high costs incurred in constructing the line crippled the company however and it was leased to the London & South West Railway and the Midland Railway as a joint operation.

Crossing the Mendip Hills, the line included tough grades and four tunnels. As most of the line was doubled between 1886 and 1894, additional single track tunnels and bridges were employed.
