A copy of a later Anglo-Saxon charter refers to the town as 'Twynham'.

Thuinham
In the Domesday Book of 1086, the town appears as 'Thuinham'.

12th century
Ecclesia Christi de Twinham
The roots of the modern name can be seen to develop in the reference to 'Ecclesia Christi de Twinham' in a 12th century document.

1318
Christchirche de Twynham
- the 14th century reference still bears the reference to the place between two streams but.....

1354
Christchurch
.....in the 1354 the town's name has assumed its modern form.

Camden, in his Britannia written in the 16^th century refers to the town's, even then archaic, name as 'Twinamburne'.
