The establishment of operations in Bargates by the Bournemouth and Poole Electric Supply Company in 1903 paved the way for the introduction of a tram service to the town which commenced on October 17th, 1905.

The tram service ran up and terminated in Church Street but, because of the lack of space in the street itself, the terminus for the trams was in the yard behind the former Dolphin Inn. Here the driver would alight from the tram and walk to the other end of the double-ended vehicle to take it back the other way to Bournemouth and beyond.

The last tram ran in Christchurch on April 8th, 1936, when the service was replaced by the new trolleybuses.
