The first castle to be built in the town was the wooden structure which was erected on an artificial mound or motte by Robert de Redvers, Earl of Devon and the Lord of the Manor of Christchurch, in the early 12th century - at about the same time as Ranulf Flambard embarked on the huge project of building the Priory Church.

Several changes of ownership of the manor led to its falling into the possession of the powerful Nevilles, Earls of Warwick. Thus was established the connection between the Priory and Margaret, Countess of Salisbury and grand-daughter of Warwick 'the King-maker'.

The stone structure which replaced it and whose remains are still to be seen was erected in the 13th century - it had already fallen into disuse and disrepair when it was "slighted" by Parliamentarian forces during the Civil War. Originally a square structure in plan with the corners chamfered, all that remains are parts of the east and west walls which are some 6 metres (20 feet) high and 3 metres (10 feet) thick.

A hundred metres or so to the east of the castle stand the roofless mediaeval ruins of the Constable's House (sometimes known as the Norman House). This was the residence of the official charged with custody of the castle during the absence of the Lord of the Manor.

Sir Thomas West, a constable of the castle who died as the 15th cntury was beginning, is buried in the Lady Chapel at the nearby Priory Church .

Christchurch or Twynham Castle is an English Heritage site. It is open to the public (free) at all reasonable times. Disabled access is available to the bottom of the motte which can only be surmounted by quite steep steps . Dogs are allowed on the site.
