Alfred Leslie Rowse (1903-1997), English historian.

He was born at St Austell, Cornwall December 4th, 1903, into a very poor family and his his parents were virtually illiterate. Despite this, Rowse won a scholarship to Christ Church College, Oxford in 1921, later becoming a Fellow of All Souls'.

He remained proud of his working-class origins. His love for his native Cornwall inspired him to write poetry as well as the works on history and English literature for which he became famous. He developed a widespread reputation for irascibility.

Rowse died on October 3rd, 1997.
