The Studland CrossStudland, Dorset, England

The Studland Cross stands on a little mound at the corner of the short road which leads to the parish church of St. Nicholas. It was placed on the site of its ancient predecessor, plain and uncarved, on July 24th, 1975, and dedicated by the Bishop of Salisbury before being removed to be carved by Mr. Trevor Haysom. The finished cross was placed in its present position on July 25th of the following year.

Trevor Heysom is descended from a long line of local masons and the surname is met in the earliest registers of the area.

The nearby parish church, dedicated to St Nicholas (patron saint of fishermen and seamen), is mostly Norman in its structure but incorporates fragments of the original Saxon walls to remind the onlooker that this site of worship existed some four hundred years before the Norman Conquest. It is therefore fitting that the cross should follow the patterns of the surviving Saxon Crosses in the county.
