swuklink: Pound (weight)

Originally (in Saxon times) the weight equivalent to 5,400 grains - this amount of silver being coined into 240 pence or, later, 20 shillings.

The troy pound of 12 ounces (oz.), weighing 5.760 grains was introduced from france in the 15th century and used for weighing gold and silver.

The pound of common use, known as aviordupois, has varied over time but came to weigh 7,000 grains and be divided into sixteen ounces (oz.).
