Stone Altars

Lanfranc ordered that altars should be made of stone at the Council of Winchester, 1076. In the 12th century, it was decreed that the altars be marked with five crosses to show that they had been consecrated.

During the Reformation, a letter of November 24th, 1550, under King Edward VI's signet ordered all stone alters to be removed from churches and destroyed. Queen Elizabeth I issued a similar decree in 1559 "for the sake of uniformity".
