Marriage Act, 1753

The Marriage Act of 1753 was a response to the scandals which had been created by secret marriages and those of minors (for whom parental consent was not required) in particular. There was also the problem of 'Fleet Marriages' whereby dissolute 'Fleet parsons' would celebrate a marriage for a small fee.

The Act provided that banns had to be published for three consecutive Sundays in the parties' parish church before the ceremony could take place and that marriages could only be performed in churches and between the hours of 0600h and noon.

For marriages under any other conditions, a special license from the archbishop was required under the Act.

Marriage Act, 1836

The Marriage Act of 1836 removed a serious grievance of the Nonconformists. It allowed those who objected to the publication of banns of marriage to be married in a church, chapel or before a registrar having given 21 days' previous notice.
