The mammals and birds are warm-blooded ("homeothermic"). All chemical reactions, including those involved in life, take place faster the higher the temperature and cold-blooded or "poikilothermic" organisms are restricted by having their body teperature restricted to that of their immediate environment.

Fish

Certain species of Tuna or Tunny maintain an elevated core temperature but the Great White Shark is the only known truly endothermic or warm-blooded fish.
