Rock is the names given to the mineral subtances which form the solid crust of the earth and other planets. Rocks are generally classified according to the processes which formed them and their mineral composition.
Rocks are broadly divided into three groups; igneous, formed by the solidification of molten magma; sedimentary, formed by the deposition of particulate matter; and metamorphic formed from either of these groups by the action of heat and pressure. Where organic material leaves an imprint of itself in rocks, the result is known as a fossil.
The nature of the underlying rocks greatly affects the landscape and the ecology of an area and is responsible for its physical features.
