The latter part of the 19th century saw a series of severe winters with the town's rivers freezing over.

The rivers froze during the winter of 1881 and the snow did not disappear until March of the following year. The Mill Stream froze over in 1890.

The townsfolk of Christchurch were surprised on the 25th of April 1908 when a late snow storm carpetted the town in a white mantle.
