The "Acte for the Preservation of Grayne" passed in 1566 declared a number of native species, including otters, as vermin and placed a price on their heads payable by Churchwardens to encourage their wholesale destruction.

For some unknown reason, the hedghog was included amongst the pests and subject to a bounty of threepence.
