Wanted & Lost

Mildenhall is a village located two miles to the east of Marlborough in Wiltshire, just to the north of the river Kennet. There was a Roman station named Cunetio here at an important road junction during the Roman period.

The school contains a curious 19th century Gothic octagonal building.

Parish Church

 The Parish Church of St John
PARISH CHURCH
The
parish church, at the southern end of Church Lane, is dedicated to St John the Baptist. The structure itself dates from Norman times with additions of the 13th and 15th centuries. It has a rare Georgian interior, crammed with oaken box pews, pulpit, reading desk and gallery, which has remained unspoilt since the refurbishment of 1816;

Visitors come to the church from all over Britain and abroad, especially from the United States of America, some claiming ancestry back to the parish.

History

ROMAN
There was a
Roman town at Werg only some four hundred metres to the north of the parish church which is well documented as Cunetio.

 The Roman Goddess Fortuna
It is possible that the much defaced Roman carving of the Roman Goddess Fortuna which is dated about 300AD and was found at the Parish Church of St Mary the Virgin in nearby Marlborough during the restoration works of 1874 may have found its way there from Cunetio.

THE DOMESDAY SURVEY
The Domesday Book of 1086 records that the Church held Mildenhalle and that Edward held it from the Church. Domesday further describes the meadows, pastures and woodlands pertaining to the village and records that there were fifteen villagers and five small-holders.
