 The Village Cross, Shapwick, Dorset

The name of the village on the banks of the river Stour derives from the Saxon for 'Sheep Village' (see Place Names).

The village cross has been restored to serve as a war memorial.

The road leading east from the village to Badbury Rings is Roman in origin. Nearby Crawford Bridge over the river Stour is medieval.

Parish Church

The Parish Church, although much rebuilt, dates from the time of the Normans.

It contains two brasses; one to Maria Oke, depicted in a 15th century dress with her hands folded in prayer; the other to Richard Chernock (d.1538), a vicar of the parish, who is depicted with a purse and beads hanging from his girdle.

Two bells in the tower are thought to be medieval. Some of the letters on the oldest are missing but the inscription can be made out to read;-

I, Kateryne, Goddes derlyng,
To thee, Mari, shall I syng.
