A former English coin with a value of a quarter of a penny, the name deriving from the Anglo-Saxon féortha + 'ing', meaning a fourth part.

The farthing was a silver coin, minted from the reign of Edward I to that of Queen Mary - none were issued during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I. The copper farthing was introduced in 1613 by James I. The farthing of James I was, however, only a token and a true copper farthing was issued by Charles II who also had a tin farthing with a copper center struck.

Bronze was substituted for copper in 1860 and a half-farthing was coined between 1842 and 1869.
