An alloy of copper with some other metal, usually tin, which is both easy to work but at the same time very durable. The alloy was first used in prehistoric times and gives its name to the Bronze Age, the earliest known bronze implements dating from about 3,500 BC.

United Kingdom Coinage

In 1860, bronze pennies weighing 1/3 oz. replaced the copper coins and the penny ceased to have any real intrinsic value. The copper farthing was also replaced by a bronze coin in the same year.
