Arrowroot is the popular name given to several plants from the roots of which a food-starch is obtained, the starch having been much used for invalids and infants.

Species of Maranta of the ginger family are used for the production of arrowroot, particularly Maranta arundinaceae which is usually known as 'arrowroot'.

Other plants, including Nelumbo mucifera and some of the genera Curcuma, Manihot, Tacca and Zammia are used to produce arrowroot of approximating that of Maranta.

ISLE OF PORTLAND, DORSET
The Cuckoo Pint or Lords and Ladies (Arum maculatum) which grew abundantly on the fallow fields on top of the Portland peninsula were used to produce an arrowroot, much of which was sold in nearby Weymouth as a cash-crop.
