History

It appears that the words "port" and "borough" or "burgh" were synonomous and interchangeable in the past, certainly during the late Saxon period.

This seems certainly to be the case during the reign of Athelstan (924-939) because his law on minting coinage reads;

We declare that there shall be one coinage throughout the King's dominions and that there shall be no minting except in a port. And if a minter be convicted of striking bad money, the hand with which he was guilty shall be cut off and set up on the mint smithy.

Collinson, writing of Milborne Port in his The History and Antiquities of the County of Somerset (1791), declares;

From the circumstance of its being a borough and market town, the most considerable in these parts, it obtained the additional name of Port, signifying a town, or incorporated vill, by which it is distinguished to this day.
