The village, built of the locally quarried Ham stone nestles among five hills - Balham, Brympton, Gawlers, Pease and Pen - in excellent walking country.

The parish church, dedicated to saints Peter and Paul occupies an ancient site on which several previous churches had been built. The present building is noted for its low central crossing tower surmounted by a spire which is one of only nineteen such in the county.

Many refurbishments and alterations have been carried out over the centuries, particularly in Victorian times.

Chiselborough was mentioned in Saxon times as 'Ceoselbergon'. In William I's Domesday Book of 1086, the village appears as 'Ceolseberge'. The name is derived from the Old English 'cesil and 'beorg', meaning 'gravel hill'.

Most of the village was owned by the Earls of Ilchester until their estates were sold off in 1914.
