The second wife of King Edgar of England (959-975), best remembered for the murder of her step-son King Edward the Martyr to secure the throne for her own son Ethelred.

Elfrida had been the wife of Ethelbald, Alderman of the East Angles, whom Edgar slew in order to obtain the hand of his widow and she seems to have connived at her husband's murder.

On Edgar's death at Winchester (July 8th, 975), he left two sons; Edward by his first wife, Ethelfleda the Fair; and, Ethelred by Elfrida - both infants.

Although his election was oppossed by his step-mother, the elder Edward who had the greater support, including that of St Dunstan (arhcbishop of Canterbury), was confirmed as king.

On March 8th, 978, while King Edward, a youth of sixteen, was hunting on the Isle of Purbeck in Dorset, Elfrida had him murdered by one of her retainers at her seat of Corfe Castle to make way for her own son Ethelred who succeeded him.

Some accounts say that she retired to a nunnery at Bere Regis to atone for her sins and ended her days there as abbess.
