Nathaniel Highmore, the famous 17th century
physician was born at Fordingbridge but moved to Purse Caundle
in Dorset as a baby when his father (of the same name) was admitted to the
Rectory there. He studied in Oxford during the Civil War where he met
William Harvey and the two physicians became life-long friends.
He practised medicine in Sherborne until his death, aged 71,
and was buried at Purse Caundle, the village of his childhood.
