The church organ and bells were removed here from Tyneham after the villagers there were forced to abandon the settlement which had existed since before the Norman conquest during the Second World War.

The Lawrences, a branch of the Washington family which produced The First President of the United States of America, George Washington, lived here. The Stars and Stripes of the US flag are derived from their arms of which several examples may be seen in the Parish Church.
