WAREHAM
Ordnance Survey Map Ref: SZ 160924
Wareham was one of the many 'burghs' of Alfred the Great's Wessex - towns fortified on the king's orders to combat the threat of Viking raids - and the huge earth ramparts which the West Saxons built still surround the town today. In Alfred's time it was the principal port of Poole Harbour before Wareham Channel (that portion of the river Frome which connects it to the harbour ) silted up and the port of Poole achieved it present-day dominance of sea-faring in the area. Now a peaceful market town, the 'Gateway to the Isle of Purbeck' presents many fine Georgian buildings erected after much of the town was devastated in the great fire of 1762.
