Kingston, with its pale grey cottages built of Purbeck stone dominated by the tower of its church, sits 400 feet high atop the seaward ridge of the Isle of Purbeck and dominates the splendid view towards Corfe Castle in the north.
The village is best approached from Corfe Castle from whence the bold tower of the church marks it against the sky - the road crosses the heaths to climb steeply amongst the trees until Kingston is revealed.

Kingston is dominated by John Scott, the 1st Earl of Eldon (1751.06.4-1838.1.13), who was England's longest serving Lord Chancellor holding the office for 26 years. He bought the village and considerable land about it and gave this small place two churches.
Lord Eldon rebuilt the old church retaining a Norman doorway in the outer wall and is buried in its graveyard with
his wife. It is still used for burials although regular services are no longer held there. The medallion of the
chancellor by
Sir Francis Chantrey is on the north wall
of the church.
The architect of the new church was G.E. Street who also designed the Law Courts in London and it was constructed of
the local stone and timber from Lord Eldon's estate in Gloucestershire over a period of six years. The
chancel and transepts have stone vaulted roofs and the pulpit with its
rich ironwork stands on a stone pedestal.
The windows are by Clayton and Bell. Those in the apse depict Christ in his Majesty and scenes from His life. The
west rose windows depicts the holy lamb and the Four Evangelists. In the aisles are prophets, apostles, kings and
saints while in the trasepts are joseph and Mary and other saints and scenes from the Last Supper, the Betrayal,
and Pntius Pilate washing his hands.

Encombe is a long and deep valley which runs from the village towards the stark seacliffs. Lord and Lady Elizabeth Eldon replaced the house which stood here with a mansion and planted many trees to enhance the landscape surrounding it.
Lord Eldon erected an obelisk in the grounds of the mansion in memory of his elder brother Lord Stowell, a distinguished judge.
