History

The Kennet & Avon was completed in 1810.

The Wilts. & Berks. Canal
The Wilts. & Berks. was proposed in 1793 to link the Kennet & Avon Canal at Semington near Melksham to the River Thames at Abingdon. Building began at Semington in 1795 and the Wilts. & Berks. reached Chippenham in 1798, Swindon in 1804 and Abingdon six years later. It included six miles of branches to Calne, Chippenham, Longcot and Wantage

Dorset & Somerset Canal
In the late 18th century, it was proposed to join the Kennet and Avon Canal near Bradford in Somerset, to the river Stour in Dorset to join the river Stour just to the east of Shillingstone. From here the Stour was, or could be made, navigable to barges to Christchurch Harbour. A branch of the canal was to be built from Frome to the Somerset coalfield to bring the coal cheaply to Dorset. Apart from part of the Frome section which was never opened, the Dorset & Somerset Canal was never built.

Honeystreet Wharf

The canal barge builders Robbins, Lane and Pinnegar was established in 1812 by Ebenezer Lane, Samuel Pinnegar and Samuel Robbins at Honeystreet Wharf. They made canal barges which were used as far away as the Midlands and trows for the river Severn. Waste oak chippings from the boatyard were sent, by canal, to to Harris's of Calne (Wilts.) for use in smoking bacon. Robbins, Lane and Pinnegar closed in the 1940s.
