THE RAILWAY
A trackman named Stevens found that one of the wooden bridges along the branch railway line from Wareham to Wool had been washed away, ran to Wool where he knocked out the signal pin rendering it inoperable and prevented the next train from starting out. Stevens was rewarded with a set of furniture which he travelled to London to recieve.

Wool was a busy station during the Second World War as it served the nearby Bovington Camp (which had been served by a branch line during the First World War).

OLD BRIDGE
A bridge spanned the river Frome here in 1343 but the present structure probably dates from the Elizabethan era. It features in Hardy's Tess of the d'Urbevilles where he describes how Tess and Angel Clare cross the bridge to reach Wellbridge Manor (Woolbridge Manor) for their honeymoon.

WOOLBRIDGE MANOR
The 17th century manor house, now a farm, features in Hardy's Tess of the d'Urbevilles where he describes how Tess and Angel Clare cross the bridge to reach Wellbridge Manor for their ill-fated honeymoon.
