Offering convenient access to the Atlantic, the Dockyard is the largest Naval base in Western Europe. It is the base for the Trafalgar class nuclear powered hunter-killer submarines and many frigates.

Covering 650 acres, it has four miles of waterfront, 25 tidal berths, 5 basins and 15 dry docks.

The dockyard is the major refitting base for the 7 Trafalgar class nuclear powered hunter-killer submarines and has a custom built dock to support the Vanguard class Trident nuclear ballistic missile submarines. It is also the base of many frigates.

Nearby is a major naval training etablishment and a base for the Royal Marines.

HMS Courageous, a nuclear powered submarine which saw action in the Falklands War (1982) is open to the public.
