The Georgian port, developed to export the China clay mined to the north of St Austell is largely unspoilt by modern development, its granite cottages and farms melting into the fields which almost meet the sea. Charlestown gives a feeling of how many West Country ports and fishing coves looked prior to modern development and often a square-rigger may be seen berthed in the harbour.
The Shipwreck, Rescue and Heritage Centre is housed in an old clay dry built on top of the tunnels formly used to transport the clay to the harbour, where a tallyman sat in an underground office and counted the bogies of clay as they passed down to the port. Some of these tunnels, used as late as 1972, may still be explored from the SR&H; Centre.
The South West Coast Path enters and leaves Cornwall by the Devon coast hugging the whole of the beautiful Cornish coast, only brocken by the county's towns and villages. It offers particularly outstanding coastal walking through an ever changing landscape of picturesque coves, creeks and spectacular cliffs.
However far you plan to walk sturdy footwear and a basic first aid kit are advisable. Allow plenty of time, for coastal walking usually takes longer than you anticipate. Check local public transport times before setting out.
