January, with 31 days, is the first month of the Gregorian calendar.

In the Gregorian calendar, January 1st is "New Year's Day", the first day of the year. In most countries it is a public holiday and in the UK and much of the Western World is celebrated on the evening of December 31st known as "New Year's Eve. It is still celebrated as a religious holy day on January 14th by those who still follow the Julian calendar such as followers of some of the Eastern Orthodox churches (known as Old Calendarists).

History

The month is named in honour of Janus, the Roman god of doors and gateways.

As the Romans considered the winter to be without months, January and February were the last months to be added to the Roman calendar. March was originally the first month of the calendar but January usurped its position it was when consuls were usually chosen.
