BEATING THE BOUNDS OF POOLE HARBOURDorset, England

The ancient ceremony of Beating the Bounds of the harbour was revived in 1921. The ceremony was a festive one with large numbers of boats following the boat o the Admiral of the Port up the quiete channels and around the islands of the harbour for a considerable portion of the 100-mile length of its shore.

At various points throughout the journey the Winchelsea Charter of 1365 was read and the following declaration made:-

Whereas some folk do suppose that water between Redd Cliefe Attewell and North Haven pertains to another place than the said town of Poole, we and our ancestors from all times past and ever since the water hath held its course there, we have named and called it the Haven of Poole.

The document which is preserved in Poole's archives is from the Mayor and Barons of Winchelsea, one of the Cinque Ports given great privileges in return for their role in protecting these isles from invaders. The port of Poole was an arm of Winchelsea. It is addressed to...

...their most dear friends and allies, the Mayor and Burgesses of Poole.

...and confirms the wide extent of maritime jurisdiction of the Port of Poole. The port enjoyed exemption from Admiralty jurisdiction since time immemorial until the passing of the Municipal Corporations Act of 1835 with the Mayor being Admiral of the Port and President of the local Admiralty Court.
