The remains of Sherborne 'Old ' Castle, built by Roger de Caen between 1122 and 1139 and Sir Walter Raleigh's family seat, stand at the western extremity of Sherborne in north-western Dorset. Raleigh built Sherborne 'New ' castle close-by in 1594. The 'Old ' castle was dismantled in 1645 after a siege by Fairfax.

Built by Sir Walter Raleigh in 1594 and set in 20 acres of glorious landscaped gardens around a 50 acre lake, Sherborne "New" Castle (left) has been home to the Digby family since 1617 and contains a fine collection of pictures, porcelain and furniture.dismantled in 1645 after a siege by Fairfax.
