West Kennet Long Barrow is one of the longest prehistoric tombs of its type in England and Wales, its stone-lined burial chambers lying at the eastern end of a mound which is one hundred metres in length.
The presitigious hill-top tomb in this area so rich in prehistoric remains was built about 3,500BC and remained in use for over a thausand years - as there were only between forty and fifty people buried within it during this long period it has to be assumed that only the ruling clan of the local farming community may have been buried here.
The human remains within the mound were not allowed to rest in peace but skulls and leg bones were periodically removed for use in ceremonies elsewhere, possibly the hill-top trading site about two miles to the north-west of the long barrow, now known as Windmill Hill.
It is possible that these ceremonies emphasised the line of long-dead ancestors in order to support the rule of the clan.
The five burial chambers withn the tomb were entered from a semicircular fore-court surrounded by a facade of standing stones which were obtained from the nearby downland. Smaller stones used to fill the gaps between the large uprights were brought thirty miles from the west. The huge mound running a hundred metres westwards was created from chalk dug from ditches on either side.
The tomb ceased to be used at about the time that the great stone circles of nearby Avebury were erected about 2,200BC. The entrance was blocked with boulders and the forecourt was closed off with three huge stone slabs.

The site was excavated in the early 1950 by Sir Mortimer Wheeler. The excavation was the subject of a BBC television programme at the time.
