Woodhenge was a similar structure to Stonehenge but constructed of wood. It was probably erected during the Bronze Age, c.2,000 BC, for religious purposes.
Although the perishable wood has disappeared, the positions of the posts which made six concentric rings but the positions of the timbers are now marked with low concrete posts, marked with different colours to indicate the ring to which it belongs.
PLAN OF WOODHENGE
The rings are oval and point to the position of the rising sun on the horizon on Midsummer Day.
Near the centre of the circles is a burial.
A bank with an inner ditch surrounded the monument which was entered by a causeway on the north-east side.
The red concrete posts do not form part of the rings.
