Neither of Wadebridge's two principal churches are in the town; the 13th century church of St Breock is at Nancient ("holy well" in Cornish); the church of St Petroc is at Egloshayle ("church by the estuary" in Cornish) - its 15th century tower, rising to a height of 80 feet, was the gift of the Revd. John Lovibond.

History

The earliest documentary record of the town is a charter of 1313 granting a market and two fairs to "Wade", in the manor of Pawton.

Wadebridge was in two parishes on either side of the river Camel, Egloshayle and St Breock, with two chapels, King's chapel (east) and St Michael's (west).

The first bridge across the river was built in 1460 by the Revd Lovibond and must have revolutionised the life of the townsfolk. 320 feet long, the bridge spanned the river with seventeen arches.

According to legend, the bridge was built on woolsacks or bales. In reality, this is probably a folk memory of the financing by the important woollen industry. A mural depicting the building of the bridge can be seen on the back of the Town Hall.

Roads were very poor and overland transport very difficult so the river must have been very important to the town; Guineaport is said to have been so named because ships mooring there were liable to a charge of a guinea (1 and 1s or 1.05 in modern currency).

The Bodmin and Wadebridge Railway Line was opened in 1834. The North Cornwall Line was closed for passenger services on January 30th, 1967. Now the railway route, known as the Camel Trail, is popular with walkers and cyclists.

An excursion was run from Wadebridge on April 13th, 1840 to watch the public execution of the Lightfoot brothers, convicted of the murder of Mr Neville Norway, at Bodmin Jail. Three trains carried 1,100 people.

The new Library stands on the site of the railway sidings. The Betjeman Centre occupies the former booking hall and waiting room of the railway while the former goods shed, now named the Betty Fisher Centre is used for community projects.

The Town Hall, originally known as Molesworth Hall, was opened in May, 1888.
