John Nelson and John Downes, two of John Welsey's advance agents, arrived tired and hungry at the tiny hamlet during the summer of 1743. They asked for refreshment at the house of journeyman stonemason Digory Isbell.

Digory was not at home and his wife, Elizabeth, entertained the two visitors whoinsisted on paying and knelt and prayed "without a book! " When Digory returned home, Elizabeth recounted the tale of the day's visitors and their unusual ways. A wet and weary Welsey himself was entertained at the Isbell's house a year later.

One evening after Wesley's visit, Digory read the Shunamite woman who built a Prophet's Chamber for a man of God in his bible and took the passage to contain a divine command and started building a two storey extension at the backof the house for the use of Wesley and his preachers when they were in the area. Trewint, by the busy A30 northern route in and out of Cornwall became a flourishing Methodist Society until other chapels were opened locally and Digory's two rooms fell into disuse, eventually becomming a roofless ruin.

The two rooms at trewint are believed to be the smallest Methodist preaching place in the world.

Wesley Cottage

The Isbell house and the Wesley rooms were restored in 1950 and opened to the public as a Methodist museum and place of Pilgrimage on May 24th, 1950. Annual Wesley Day Celebrations are held in May each year.

The house and Wesley Rooms are open every day from 9.00 am until dusk excepting Christmas Day
Admission. Free
