London and South Western Railway

The Dartmoor Line was part of the London and South Western Railway's plan to extend the Devon and Cornwall Railway to break the monopoly of the broad guage Great Western Railway with the prize of Plymouth and the Devonport Dockyard. Having reached Exeter in 1860, it leased the Exeter & Crediton and the Taw Valley Railways two years later, laying a third rail for standard guage trains.
