The village is built of the golden Liassic limestone which is used locally and the new developments are constructed of the same material.
King Alfred the Great gave the village to Sherborne Abbey.

The parish church, dedicated to St Mary, dates from the 15th-century. It possesses good carved bench ends, particularly near the chancel entrance. The medieval tower rises to a height of ninety feet and two of its eleven niches still possess their original carved figures.
The pulpit is Jacobean, its canopy was removed and used to make a table.
