The "United Kingdom of Great Britain" was created by the Act of Union, 1707 when the kingdoms of England and Scotland were united, primarily to ensure the Protestant succession to the crowns of Scotland and England.

The monarchies of England and Scotland became united on the death of Queen Elizabeth I in 1603 when King James VI of Scotland also became King James I of England. Wales had already been united with England by the Act of Union of 1536 (Henry VIII).

The Act of Union of 1801 united the Kingdoms of Great Britain and Ireland to create the "United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland".
