King of England, Henry VII founded the House of Tudor and brought to an end the Wars of the Roses.

BibliographyLinksLocallyPeople

Henry based his claim to the throne on the grounds that he was a descendant of John of Gaunt (1340-1399) through his mother, Margaret, the Countess of Richmond. She was the great granddaughter of John of Gaunt by Catherine Swynford; all of their children were born before their marriage.

Although in 1407, Henry IV (1399-1413) confirmed Richard II's (1377-1399) legitimation in 1397 of the children of John of Gaunt by Catherine Swynford, he had specifically excluded the Beaufort's from any claim to the throne of England.

Henry's claim was therefore very weak, but, the death of Henry VI's only son, Edward, in 1471, the death of his own two kinsmen (of the Beaufort line), and the death of Henry VI himself (1471), left Henry Tudor as the only surviving male member of the House of Lancaster.

Henry Tudor, earl of Richmond, was born in 1457, the son of Edmund Tudor, earl of Richmond, and Margaret Beaufort. His father having died nearly three months before he was born, and his mother being only 14 years old, Henry was brought up by his uncle Jasper Tudor, the earl of Pembroke.

With the Lacastrians badly defeated at the battle of Tewkesbury in May 1471, Jasper Tudor and the young Henry Tudor sought refuge in the duchy of Brittany. The House of York seemed to have become so firmly established that it seemed that Henry Tudor would remain in exile until his death.

Richard III's usurpation of the throne provided Henry Tudor's chance by dividing the House of York. Henry, duke of Buckingham, rebelled in 1483 and Henry was invited to rally Lancastrian support for Buckingham's rebellion. Before Henry could land in England, Buckingham's rebellion had failed.

Richard III had declared his intention to invade France. When Henry Tudor promised to marry Elizabeth of York, uniting the Houses of Lancaster and the Yorkist opposition to Richard III, his cause was supported by France.

In 1485, Henry landed at Mill Bay in Milford Haven, Wales, and started his advance eastwards to London. Thanks to the desertion of Richard III by Henry's stepfather Thomas, Lord Stanley (afterward created the 1st earl of Derby), in favour of Henry, Richard III's initially superior forces were defeated at the battle of Bosworth on August 22nd, 1485, the last of the Plantagenet kings being killed in the battle.

Henry based his claim to the throne by inheritance, on the grounds that he was a descendant of John of Gaunt (1340-1399) through his mother, Margaret, the Countess of Richmond, and by the judgment of God given in battle (conquest).

Henry VII was crowned on October 30th, 1485, with parliament recognising his title in early November. He married Elizabeth of York on January 18th, 1486.

Descended from the Beauforts, (illigitimate descendants of John of Gaunt, the ancestor of the House of Lancaster, Henry claimed to be the Lancastrian heir.

Henry usurped the throne after defeating Richard III, last of the Plantagenet kings, at the battle of Bosworth.

Henry had no right to the throne by birth, but claimed it by right of conquest and descent from the early British kings. The were at least six male members of the House of Plantagenet still living with a stronger hereditary claim to the throne than Henry VII. With such tentative claims to the throne, Henry VII sought an alliance by the marriage of his son, Arthur, with one of the two major European powers, France or the newly emerged Spain. Henry would not trust France with which England had been at war for almost 200 years so he negotiated with Ferdinand and Isabella of Spain.

Henry VII was crowned on October 30th, 1485. He secured the recognition of his title by parliament in November of that year.

He married Elizabeth of York on January 18th, 1486 and she bore their son (named Arthur in support of the Tudor claim to descent from a famous king) in September 1846.

Although the birth of an heir to the claims of both Yorkists and Lancastrians might appear to have secured Henry VII's position, many Yorkists of influence had been dispossessed and memories of the many reversals of fortune during the 30 years war gave them hope that Henry VII might be toppled.

Henry VII was the first of the five Tudor monarchs who ruled England until the death of Elizabeth I in 1603.

Henry's reign was a welcome period of peace for England which had been at war almost continously for over a hundred years; the ending of a hundred year of war with France was swiftly followed by the Wars of the Roses which lasted more than thirty years.

Henry forced the nobles to abide by the laws of the land and heavily fined those who tried to keep private armies.

His marriage to Elizabeth of York joined the two fueding houses who had fought each other so bitterly during the Wars of the Roses.

Henry brought traders, lawyers and merchants into the government to replace the feudal system by which England had been governed since William the Conqueror's reign from the conquest of 1066.

He encouraged trade and, no doubt mindful that his kingdom was an island, shipbuilding.

After Henry VII died in 1509, his son, Henry VIII inherited a peaceful and prosperous kingdom. He also inherited some £1,000,000, a truly vast sum at the time, which had been amassed by his father.

Henry VIII's sister, Mary Tudor, married Louis XII of France in 1514.

Arthur (b.1486), Henry's eldest son was married to the Spanish princess Catherine of Aragon. The marriage was negotiated by Henry VII to obtain recognition by Spain, united for the first time by the marriage of Ferdinand of Aragon and Isabella of Castile, and with, England's enemy, France the major European power.

Margaret married James IV of Scotland.

HENRY Henry VII's second son, Henry, became king Henry VIII on the death of his father in 1509; his elder brother Arthur died before him and he was only seventeen when he was crowned.

Katherine of Aragon   (1485-1536)

Youngest daughter of Ferdinand II of Aragon and Isabella of castile, was betrothed to Arthur, Prince of Wales, by the Treaty of Medina del Campo (1489) made with Henry VII of England (1485-1509) seeking to increase his political power and secure the Tudor dynasty. She married Arthur in 1501 but was widowed the following year. Reluctant to return her huge dowery, Henry VII started negotiations for her marriage to Prince Henry, the marriage taking place after long delays in 1509 when Henry became king. The only survivor of six children by the marriage was Mary (1515-1558, queen of England, 1553-8) and Thomas Cromwell arranged Henry VIII's divorce from Katherine in 1534 causing England's rift with the Roman Catholic Church.

The fleet scattered by a storm, Henry entered Poole Harbour in Dorset with only one ship.
