The son of Henry V, Henry succeeded to the throne of England when less than a year old and, on the death of Charles VI soon afterwards, also became the king of France. He was crowned at Westminster in 1429 and Paris in 1431.

By the Treaty of Troyes of 1420 which attempted to end the preceding decades of warfare between England and France, on the death of Charles VI in 1422, Henry ruled northern France through a regent in Normandy and southern France was ruled by the Dauphin Charles VII from the fortified castle at Chinon.

During his youth, the French possessions which had been won by his father were lost so that, by 1453, only Calais remained.

The king lost his reason in the same year and Richard of York became Protector, only to be deposed the following year when Henry recovered. This sparked of the hostility between the houses of York and Lancaster, bringing about what became known later as the Wars of the Roses.

Defeated at the battle of Townton, Margaret retreated to France only to return to England via Weymouth to continue the fight. In the spring of 1471, mother and son were at Cerne Abbey in Dorset when news arived that the Earl of Warwick, "the king-maker", had been killed and defeated at the battle of Barnet and that Henry was incarcerated in the Tower.

Margaret of Anjou

The King's wife, Margaret of Anjou, was one of the most formidable women in English history. She fought to put her son, Edward the Prince of Wales, on the English throne.

Richard Neville, Earl of Warwick, the Kingmaker (c.1428-1471)

Originally supporting the Yorkists in the Wars of the Roses, he proclaimed Edward IV as king. He later changed his allegiance, restoring the Lancastrian king Henry VI. He died at the battle of Barnet.
